Our theme is “Engineers Make It Real — from Ideas to Reality”

At this one-day event held annually, students in grades 4 -12 compete in events where they design and build a specific device to compete against other area students. The events are fun and rewarding for the students. More importantly, the hands-on-learning is often the spark that inspires a student to pursue a career in science and engineering. With this in mind, we need help in a number of ways. We need volunteers that can help organize the event and/or help on the day of the event. We need individuals or companies to sponsor activities by donating money, prizes, or giveaways. Most significantly, we need help spreading the word about the event. Less than 20% of schools that could participate actually do. If you know a student that is not involved with TECh, let their teacher/school know about it. For more information: email tech@tulsaengineer.org. Meg Broge, Chairman.

ENGINEERING WORKFORCE COMPETITION!
Scale Model Gingerbread Building Competition
With enormous excitement and anticipation, the Tulsa Alliance for Engineering invites you to participate in our Scale Model Gingerbread Building Competition. Presented by WaterWorks Art Studio, the Scale Model Gingerbread Building Exhibit will run from Friday, November 30 – December 13. The official opening to the public is Friday, November 30. The public is invited to enjoy this unique display of architecturally significant and famous buildings rendered in gingerbread in one of Tulsa’s most beloved historical public buildings. WaterWorks is housed in a renovated historical building in Newvblock Park that once served as Tulsa’s water treatment plant and later the site of the City’s first public swimming pool. It was named WaterWorks to maintain those historical roots.
Plan now to be a part of this new annual holiday tradition by creating a Scale Model Gingerbread Building.
Suggestions:
Start Now! Perfection really does take time. This wonderful, dynamic, artistic, and architectural process will take longer than you are thinking it will.
The gingerbread buildings will be displayed in three separate areas of the WaterWorks Art Studio and will be grouped according to division. Space restrictions limit the number of exhibits to 60 Gingerbread Buildings, so send your entry in early to reserve your space.
Please read the attached information carefully, follow the entry guidelines, and pay close attention to the dates so you can secure a place for your entry in this year’s event. Please call should you have any questions or need any additional information.
We can’t wait to see the results of the creative and critical thinking of old and young competitors alike. The results will be beautiful renditions of architects’ best and most famous works. More importantly there will be beaming faces of budding architects and artists admiring their own work, that of their peers, and that of those they hope to emulate.

If real icing is used please use the ROYAL ICING (recipe included) to ensure icing will harden and hold together. Glue works better to hold parts together, so we suggest the Royal Icing be used only decoratively.
ROYAL ICING
3 Large eggs – separated
½ tsp. Cream of Tartar
1 (16oz.) package of powdered sugar
Combine cream of tartar and room temperature egg whites in a large bowl. Beat at medium speed until the whites are frothy. Gradually add sugar, beating on low until the sugar is moistened.
Beat on high speed until mix is very glossy and stiff peaks form (5-7 minutes). If necessary, add more powdered sugar.
Icing dries out quickly; keep it covered. It keeps 3 days in an airtight container at room temperature. Never double the recipe; make 2 batches instead. Can be colored with food coloring or piped.
 Gingerbread Buildings should be delivered through the

AVIATION INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

Avgas Issues Will Take Time To Resolve

by Matt Thurber

AIN Online

11/1/2012

The aviation industry is slowly headed toward development of an unleaded replacement fuel for avgas-burning piston-powered aircraft, and a recent move by the FAA is an encouraging sign that progress will continue. The FAA recently agreed to open a new Fuels Program Office, according to NATA, that will provide “technical expertise and strategic direction in the planning, management and coordination of activities related to aviation fuels.”

NATA and several other aviation associations (AOPA, EAA, GAMA and NBAA) sent a letter on August 1 to FAA acting administrator Michael Huerta, asking for the FAA’s help in funding and managing efforts to find a suitable replacement for 100LL (100-octane) avgas. 100LL relies on the additive tetraethyl lead to prevent detonation in high-compression piston engines that power high-performance aircraft, and pressure from environmental groups and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has intensified scrutiny of leaded avgas.

An aviation rulemaking committee has explored the avgas issue and made recommendations to the FAA. According to the association letter to the FAA, “We are at a critical phase between consideration of the Unleaded Avgas Transition Aviation Rulemaking Committee (UAT ARC) recommendations and implementation of a fiscally responsible FAA unleaded avgas program that will achieve this objective.” The letter asked Huerta to fund the FAA’s avgas program with $5.5 million in the Fiscal Year 2014 budget, “not only for the economic sustainability of general aviation in the U.S., but also for its safety.”

The FAA avgas program will help in two key ways. One is to demonstrate that the FAA and industry are working together on a clear path to an unleaded fuel replacement. Without that clarity, owners, operators and investors won’t be motivated to maintain their aircraft and invest in new avionics and other aviation technologies. “An avgas program is also needed to support the FAA’s statutory role in cooperation with the EPA to implement any lead emissions standards for aircraft it deems necessary under the Clean Air Act,” according to the letter.

The UAT ARC report was submitted to the FAA earlier this year and recommended five key elements covering testing and certification of an unleaded avgas that would power the existing piston-engine fleet. The report noted that there is currently no drop-in replacement for 100LL avgas (although lower-power engines can operate on automotive unleaded gas in some aircraft, under a supplemental type certificate).

According to the associations’ letter, “The FAA’s direct involvement and participation in this process is critical to ensuring a fleet-wide transition to an unleaded avgas that will maintain consumer confidence and ensure the least impact on the existing fleet. The establishment of the new Fuels Program Office will ensure an efficient use of both government and industry resources and will provide a more comprehensive pathway and timeline to an unleaded fuel.”

Debate Continues in California

Meanwhile, in California, the battle between the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) and fuel sellers and distributors continues. Last year, CEH, a San Francisco-based environmental group, filed notices of violation (NOVs) against California-based avgas sellers, distributors and manufacturers. California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act requires companies that use substances known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm to warn people who might be exposed to these substances. The act, also known as Proposition 65, allows anyone to file a citizen’s enforcement action on behalf of Californians 60 days after serving the notices, unless the state attorney general brings suit first. CEH is seeking to block the sale of leaded avgas in California and wants to impose financial penalties on the companies named in the NOVs because the companies didn’t warn people about the potential exposure to leaded avgas. And if CEH is successful, it will earn revenues because the law allows such organizations to receive a portion of any financial penalties imposed on the violators.

Fuel companies and FBOs have formed the CA Avgas Coalition to fight the prospect of financial penalties because of CEH’s actions. Little progress has been made, and CEH and the coalition are still negotiating. “Typically, the goal with our litigation is not to have a trial but to negotiate a consent judgment, with both sides coming to an agreement that accomplishes the goals, and everybody can live with it,” said Caroline Cox, research director at CEH. “That process can be time-consuming.” She anticipates that any judgment will include reducing the exposure to lead and warning people about the exposure. If the exposure amount can be reduced below the state’s safe harbor level, then no warning about the substance is necessary, she explained.

Some California FBOs have raised the price of avgas to cover the cost of defending against the CEH’s actions. David Mills, general manager of Business Jet Center at Oakland International Airport, said, “We are part of the Avgas Coalition. It was a strategic and financial decision to join: there’s strength in numbers and it’s better to share defense costs than go it alone. We have increased the price of avgas by $0.25 per gallon to cover a small percentage of the cost of litigation defense.”

Area high school students participated in the Inaugural Engineer Games on October 30th. Each team of four students had an engineer mentor and competed in a succession of engineering challenges loosely based upon the popular Hunger Games series. Special thanks goes to Anthony Barber, Chriss Chavez, Suzanne Dodson, Jillian Coghill and Monica Rodriguez for recruiting and mentoring teams. In Hunger Games tradition, there were sponsors who gave special help and tips to the teams as they competed. Tulsa Alliance for Engineering (TAE) sincerely appreciates the work of Tulsa Community College engineering students Maggie Smith, Brandon Triffo, and Tyler Nitsche for their work as sponsors in the Engineer Games. The Tulsa Alliance for Engineering is extremely grateful for the support of OERB in funding the Engineer Games T-shirts for the participants. The Engineer Games also enjoyed enthusiastic support from local high school teachers who put in extra work to make the contest possible.

The Alliance wants to commend the following teachers:

Brenda Irving Tri-County Tech Center, Bartlesville
Bryan Yockers Jenks High School
April Dalto Rogers High School
Jalinda Hogan Broken Arrow High School Maemi Dildy Edison High School
Marie Pfaff Union High School
Richelle Krumsiek Bixby High School
November and December TAE events:
Engineers At Lunch – Election Day – Tuesday, November 6.
• The focus of the meetings is the shoulder to shoulder dialogue between engineering students and professional engineers and to a lesser extent the conversations between engineering students and engineering professors. One of the keys to keeping engineering students in the pipeline is a relationship with other engineers! In addition to those one-on-one conversations, the companies present a 5 – 20 minute look at engineering in their company. It can either highlight something that the company is zeroing in on now or a more general informational look at the types of work engineers do for at their respective company.
• The secondary goal with these lunches is to expose the engineering students to as many different types of engineering and engineering settings as possible to help them make more informed career decisions.
• The third goal is to give companies a low pressure look at engineering students from across the city with the hope that those same companies will offer these students summer and permanent engineering positions. That’s not asking too much from a sub sandwich lunch is it??
All engineering students from OU-Tulsa, OSU-Tulsa, ORU, the University of Tulsa and TCC as well as professional engineers are invited. These lunches take place at TCC’s northeast campus. The next one in November will be in the Seminar Center.

‘Great Minds in STEM/VIVA Technology” on Friday, Nov. 9. 100-120 8th grade students are involved in a one day STEM immersion event. This event is sponsored by Tinker Air Force Base and produced by VIVA Technology. Outstanding needs 5 engineers to serve as mentors for the event. A parent/teacher session is planned for the evening before on Nov. 8th.
November 13 – STEMulation Brainstorming Summit 5:00 -6:30 PM TCC northeast campus
This is a great opportunity for local engineers, educators, business partners, and philanthropists to put our heads together and brainstorm on ways to do a better job of delivering STEM education for Tulsa area students.
Scale Model Gingerbread Building Contest – This is an opportunity for local engineering and architecture enthusiasts to compete tastefully! The exhibit is limited to 60 entries – K-4 through adult/professional. Entries must be submitted to WaterWorks by Tuesday, November 27. The exhibit will run through Tuesday, December 11.
Tulsa Alliance for Engineering presents the John Green Award to Celeste Baine

“Why is being a nerd bad? Saying I notice you’re a nerd is like saying, ‘Hey, I notice that you’d rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you’d rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Linsey Lohan. Why is that?”
― John Green

The Tulsa Alliance for Engineering proudly presents Celeste Baine with the John Green Award for thoughtful and diligent work in the cause of advancing the public understanding and appreciation of engineering through her book Is There an Engineer Inside You?

Postscript: Celeste Baine has been instrumental in promoting STEM education in Tulsa with the Teaching Engineering Made Easy Workshop that TEF helped sponsor last spring and the GLEE! Girls Love Exploring Engineering Summer Camp hosted by Lane Matheson at Tulsa Academy for Engineering at Memorial HS.

Please contact Xan Black if you can help with any of these events. (xblack@tulsacc.edu)
