Universal Avionics Systems Corporation was founded in 1981 with the goal of designing and developing the first Flight Management System for the corporate and commercial aviation marketplace.

The details of a “Master Navigation System” had been formulated by Hubert L. Naimer several years earlier. This objective, his personal conception and dream, originated from years of flying experience and critical evaluation of many types and generations of navigation systems. The Master Navigation System, he concluded, should be capable of accepting inputs from any variety of position sensors including provisions for new types in the future. It should be of optimal size with a large display; easy to use, with a simple self-explanatory interface with the pilot and its operation independent of environments and phases of flight. It should provide guidance outputs in three dimensions and be capable of flying all required procedures and maneuvers. Fuel management and radio tuning would be included, as well.

Within 18 months, Hubert L. Naimer and his carefully selected experienced team reached their goal. Their innovative development of a Flight Management System provided the worldwide market its next quantum leap in airborne navigation. Their navigation system would become the standard for business aircraft throughout the world.

Two sister companies were originally created under Universal Avionics Systems Corporation: Microcomputer Electronics Corporation was established to develop, design, engineer and manufacture the system; Universal Navigation Corporation was formed to define, certify, market and support the product: the UNS-1. In 1998, with the evolution of a broader product line, the companies were reorganized under the Universal Avionics Systems Corporation parent name as the Manufacturing Division, the Research & Development Division and the Marketing/Support Division
