SwRI is one of the original and largest independent, nonprofit (501-3C), applied research and development organization in the United States. It was founded in 1947 as a nonprofit corporation to provide contract research and development services to industrial and government clients. It is qualified as a large business in relation to SIC Code 3728. The Institute consists of 13 technical divisions that offer multidisciplinary, problem-solving services in a variety of areas in the physical sciences and engineering.

Aerospace engineering, advanced electronics, computer science, materials, and structures are major technology application areas at SwRI, but our capabilities in other engineering and physical science disciplines provide the additional technical breadth necessary to address all issues which must be answered to provide a complete solution to complex military aircraft and ground based systems integration and support problems.
